The Boat

Telefonica Black is a stripped-out racing boat with very few luxuries, so please expect high side hot bunking, freeze-dried food – as the galley consists of a sink and 1 camping stove for boiling water and a very exciting gimbled heads!

We like to be fully inclusive and give amateur sailors the chance to participate in all aspects of sailing the boat – we can assure you; you will not just be sitting on the rail.

The Race – Round Britain and Ireland Race

The race begins at the Royal Yacht Squadron Line in Cowes, following which the fleet race through the Solent past the impressive headlands of southwest England. This thrilling race continues into the Celtic Sea, past the Fastnet Rock and Mizen Head onto the West Coast of Ireland. The course then takes racers past St Kilda to the most northerly point of the course, Muckle Flugga. After turning south through the notorious North Sea the fleet will be headed home. Forming the final stages of the race, the English Channel and the Solent stand between the fleet and an extremely warm welcome at the RORC Cowes Clubhouse.

Alongside Training: Thursday 4th August 2022

On Water Training: Friday 5th and Saturday 6th August 2022

Race Start: Sunday 7th August 2022

Arrive in Gunwharf Quays Marina at the yacht on Thursday at 9am where you’ll be introduced to the boat, professional crew, and get to meet your fellow sailors!

The training will focus on a safety brief, deck, winch and backstay briefs, MOB drills and sail changes.

There will be a Skipper, and 2 watch leaders onboard.

When you book onto one of our races you are fully committing yourself, you are not a passenger on this boat. We really feel strongly that this is your boat to race and we facilitate that in every way we can. We keep the boat running, look after you, keep you fed and watered and provide support on all the watches.

You are split into 2 watches. On short races, they are 3-hour watches and on longer races, they are 4 hours. The skipper floats between both watches and is always on hand if you need him. The watch leaders help you in all aspects of the deck, from sail changes to evolutions. They have experience on the yacht and will keep you safe and competitive. They also do all the cooking and cleaning so you get to focus on racing.

For more information and the history of the race please visit the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race website.

Please note that “the minimum experience requirements are 500 nautical miles of offshore racing or equivalent passage(s). The experience requirement shall be completed by a minimum of 30% of the crew (but no fewer than two) including the Person in Charge, and within 18 months of the start of the race.”. If you have sailed with us before, then you will meet the requirements. If you have not sailed on Telefonica we would suggest to join us on an experience weekend or race.
